Carts and Boats

The modes of transport in ancient times were simple. Ordinary people walked on foot to cover short distances. Kings and princes used horse carriages, elephants and horses to move around. However, in the recent past various types of carts were used for the day to day transportation of people and goods.

Traditional boats, canoes and barges made of timber were used in the past to cross rivers, reservoirs and for seafaring. It is noteworthy that there was a well developed ship building industry during the time of King Parakramabahu the Great. Canoes are made by digging out and creating a hollow in the center of a single tree trunk, with an outrigger extending from it to give it stability. Double canoes are built by joining two canoes together. Barges have a large platform and were used to transport goods along canals.
